There is a very chilly wind as I write this, but hopefully warmer weather is on its way, which will be welcomed by all the plants in our gardens. Graham Watts on Page 10 describes some of the wonderful gardens which will be open in our area during the summer as part of the NGS scheme. One of the gardens which will be open to visitors is of course Corinne Steward’s, who is our regular gardening correspondent. Please see Page 11 for her excellent advice on looking after your own gardens.

May is also the start of the season for Scarning Bowls Club who have a very busy calendar of matches throughout the summer months. The bowls matches are all included in the Village Events calendar on this website, so come along and cheer on the home team.

May also sees the return of competitive tennis in Scarning again, which has been absent for a number of years. These matches are also on the village website, and you can read about the matches and also the twice weekly free community sessions on Page 9.

The first weekend of June is only just around the corner, when the whole nation will be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion and here in Scarning there will be a range of events taking place to make it a memorable experience. More details will follow, but the weekend starts with a live band and BBQ to mark the lighting of the beacon on Thursday evening.  Friday is street party day, followed by an art exhibition, coffee morning and cream teas on Saturday. Sunday is the day for lunchtime picnics followed by a Jubilee themed fete, with lots of free activities for people of all ages. See Page 14 for more details.
